49ers Sign CB Asa Jackson, Waive/Injured CB Zach Franklin

49ers signed cornerback Asa Jackson to a one-year deal In order to make room on the roster, the team has waived/injured cornerback Zach Franklin.  Jackson (5-10, 183) was originally drafted by the Baltimore Ravens in the fifth round (169th overall) of the 2012 NFL Draft. Throughout his five-year NFL career with the Ravens (2012-15) and Detroit Lions (2016), he has appeared in 22 games (eight starts) and registered 34 tackles and four passes defensed. A 27-year-old native of Sacramento, CA, Jackson attended Cal Poly where he appeared in 43 games (42 starts) and totaled 199 tackles, 40 passes defensed, eight interceptions, three forced fumbles and one sack. Jackson will wear number 31. Franklin (6-0, 200) originally signed with the team as an undrafted rookie free agent on May 4, 2017 out of Washburn University. Donavin Newsom suffers concussion in 49ers' practice San Francisco 49ers linebacker Donavin Newsom was taken off the field by paramedics after a collision with a teammate Tuesday afternoon. The undrafted rookie out of Missouri had his eyes open, had feelings in his hands and had movement in his lower body after the collision, coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters after practice. Newsom was taken to the hospital. The team announced in a statement the rookie linebacker suffered a concussion in the collision but no cervical spine fractures. "San Francisco 49ers linebacker Donavin Newsom was transported to Stanford Medical Center following an injury sustained during practice earlier today," the statement read. "After evaluation, doctors determined Newsom has no cervical spine fractures, but did suffer a concussion. Newsom remains at Stanford Medical Center under observation." 49ers signed linebacker Austin Calitro to a 2-yr deal. Calitro (6-0, 240) originally signed with the New York Jets as an undrafted rookie free agent on May 5, 2017 out of Villanova University and was later waived by the team on May 15. During his time at Villanova (2012-16), he appeared in 48 games and registered 220 tackles, 26 tackles for loss, 8.5 sacks, eight passes defensed, three forced fumbles and two interceptions.  As a senior in 2016, Calitro tied the team lead with 86 tackles and also registered 12 tackles for loss and 3.5 sacks, earning First-Team All-CAA honors. In 2015, he led the team in tackles (90) and forced fumbles (three), finished with 11.5 tackles for loss and 4.5 sacks while earning Third-Team All-CAA honors. He played in all 14 games in 2014 and had 33 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, one interception and one pass defensed. Kyle Shanahan signed veteran tight end Logan Paulsen during the team’s first wave of free-agent additions.  I’m really excited with the direction this team is going,” Paulsen said. “I’m going to do whatever they want me to do. Like the touchdown (Saturday) was all scheme. So, that’s Kyle’s touchdown in my opinion. So, however Kyle wants to use me, whatever he wants me to do. If he wants me to score touchdowns that’s great.
