Niners Fall to Jags: Win Streak Snapped in Santa Clara

The San Francisco 49ers suffered their first defeat of the 2025 season, falling 26–21 to the Jacksonville Jaguars. Despite 300+ yards from Mac Jones and a gritty performance by Jauan Jennings, turnovers and a stagnant run game proved to be the undoing of the 3-1 Niners.

The 49ers Faithful at Levi’s Stadium during the Week 4 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars.
A tough afternoon in Santa Clara. Early mistakes proved costly as the 49ers fell 26–21 to Jacksonville.

Game Summary

In a back-and-forth affair, the 49ers saw their three-game winning streak come to a crashing end. Mac Jones moved the ball effectively, but two interceptions proved fatal. With the running game stifled—Christian McCaffrey was held to just 58 yards—the offense became one-dimensional. The defense kept it close, but Jacksonville’s red-zone efficiency made the difference in the fourth quarter.

Key Player Performances

  • Mac Jones: 29/45, 312 yards, 2 TDs, 2 INTs — Production was there, but turnovers swung the game
  • Christian McCaffrey: 58 rushing yards, 6 catches, 44 receiving yards — Bottled up all afternoon
  • Jauan Jennings: 6 catches, 82 yards, 1 TD — Physical presence and reliable target
  • Ricky Pearsall: 4 catches, 52 yards — Continued development as a secondary option
  • Fred Warner: 10 tackles, 1 sack — Led the defensive resistance

Turnover Battle

The 49ers lost the turnover battle 2–0, and in a five-point game, that margin told the entire story.

  • The Tip: A pass intended for Jennings was tipped and intercepted by Josh Hines-Allen, leading directly to a Jaguars touchdown.
  • End Zone Interception: A late forced throw by Jones was picked off by Tyson Campbell, ending San Francisco’s comeback hopes.

What This Loss Means

A 3–1 record is still solid, but this game exposed how thin the margin for error is without Brock Purdy and a true WR1. If the 49ers want to remain in control of the NFC West, they must reestablish their identity in the run game.

Looking Ahead & Injury Update

San Francisco now heads to SoFi Stadium for a pivotal divisional matchup against the Rams.

  • Nick Bosa: Out with a knee injury; Week 5 status remains uncertain
  • Brock Purdy: Rehab continues; the team is hopeful he can return next week
  • Brandon Aiyuk: Still away from the team; his future with the 49ers remains unclear
